Getting Started with Meta Ads
Work out the most you can pay for a customer, a lead and a click from your own margin, set up Facebook and Instagram ads that report real outcomes, and decide every creative test by a rule you wrote before launch.
What’s Inside
- The Allowable Cost Ladder: from contribution to the most you can pay per customer, per lead, per click, and your budget ceiling
- The spreadsheet (meta-allowance.xlsx): Ladder, Auction Chain, Learning Check, Cohorts and Marginal tabs with live formulas
- The reconciliation ratio: Meta's lead count against your own, with a guess-then-count baseline
- The learning-budget check: can one ad set ever leave learning on your budget
- The Test Brief: tell a real creative winner from the ad Meta simply preferred
- Lead-week cohort sheet and marginal cost log
- Objective, goal and event table, event acceptance checks, Instant Form spec
- A dated 30-day setup, monthly scorecard, 30 and 90-day look-backs
- 20 worksheets, a 24-week tracker and 3 setup guides
The Problem
Most owners judge Meta ads on cost per lead with no line to judge it against. A $40 lead can be a bargain for one business and a slow loss for another. Meta reports its own results by its own rules, and spends most of your budget on whichever ad it predicted would win in the first few days.
Your Meta ads are not failing because Facebook does not work. You never worked out what a lead is worth to you, so nothing told you whether you were winning.
The 4-Layer Meta Ads Funnel
4 layers, each judged against the Allowable Cost Ladder you build from your own margin.
- Layer 1: AUDIENCE. Hot, then warm, then cold, under Advantage+, where interests and lookalikes are suggestions and location is a control.
- Layer 2: CREATIVE. Matched to what the viewer already knows, with hook, retain and reward, tested by a written brief instead of by where Meta spent.
- Layer 3: OFFER. Built on paper first, with the route chosen on purpose: website or Instant Form, compared fairly on paying customers.
- Layer 4: SIGNAL. Pixel and Conversions API, outcomes sent back from your CRM, acceptance checks, and the 3 traps that make the dashboard lie.

Questions
Does it tell me what a good cost per lead is? No. It shows you how to work out yours from your margin and your sales stages. A benchmark you hit while losing money is worse than none.
How much do I need to spend? The book does not set a budget. Your ladder gives you a ceiling from what you can deliver and what a customer is worth, and the learning check shows what one ad set needs.
Is it current? Platform steps are dated October 2026: business portfolio (the old Business Manager), Advantage+ audience, the March 2026 attribution change, the April 2026 Conversions API requirement for qualified leads.
Are there case studies? No client results. The examples are labelled hypothetical composites with round numbers, and one of them goes wrong on purpose.
Who This Is For
The owner of a local business (a print shop, a contractor, a salon, a clinic, a trade) who has boosted posts and got nothing, or has never run Meta ads and does not want to lose the first thousand dollars learning what this book covers.
