Marketing 101 Textbook
The complete owner-operator field manual for marketing that actually works. Offer, Content, Traffic, Conversion, Retention, in the order you build them.
Five parts. In the order you build them. Not tactics. A system.
Everything in the Textbook
Every framework is sourced. Every stat has a citation. Every template has been used in the field. Pick the tile, build the layer.
CHAPTER 1The 15-Minute Quick Win
Here is the question. Answer it before you read another page.
"If someone said yes to my offer right now, what specifically would they be getting, and what happens if they do not get the result?"
That is it. That is the whole exercise.
If your answer is fuzzy, your marketing is fuzzy. Every ad, every landing page, every sales call is downstream of this one answer.
The question comes from Sabri Suby's Godfather Offer work in Sell Like Crazy (Suby, 2019). Alex Hormozi calls the fix a Grand Slam Offer in $100M Offers (Hormozi, 2021). Both are pointing at the same thing. You do not have a service. You sell an outcome, packaged with terms.
The 15-minute script
Get a piece of paper. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Answer these seven prompts, in order.
- Prompt 1. In one sentence, what is the exact outcome my customer walks away with? (Not what I do. What they get.)
- Prompt 2. How fast do they get it? (Days, weeks, months.)
- Prompt 3. What do they have to do themselves? (List everything.)
- Prompt 4. What is the specific guarantee if they do not get the result? (Refund, redo, keep working free until.)
- Prompt 5. What is the price? (Real number.)
- Prompt 6. What is one reason why the price is this and not lower? (Materials, time, expertise, capacity.)
- Prompt 7. Read those six answers out loud. Would a smart friend, hearing them, say "yeah, that is worth it"?
If yes, you have an offer. If no, that is your homework for the week. Rewrite the six answers until yes.
Test it in one hour: text three past customers, paste your seven answers reduced to one paragraph, ask "would this make sense to a new person?" Three replies will tell you more than $500 of ads will.
CHAPTER 2Why Most Owner-Operator Marketing Fails
If you are reading this book, one of these five is true:
- You tried three or four tactics and none stuck.
- You are about to spend real money and want a plan first.
- You have marketing running but cannot tell what is working.
- You get leads but they do not close.
- You have customers but they do not come back or refer.
All five have the same root cause. The parts are out of order.
Most owners try to fix marketing by adding a tactic. More Meta ads. A new website. TikTok. SEO. Email newsletters. Each new tactic feels like progress. Six months later they have spent $10,000 and have nothing to show for it.
The three lies you have been told
Lie 1: "Post more content." More content on top of a weak offer produces more attention and no revenue. Fix the offer first. Then post.
Lie 2: "You need to be on every platform." You do not. Two platforms, done well, will beat five, done poorly, every time. Guaranteed.
Lie 3: "Ads do not work anymore." Ads work fine. What does not work is running ads to a landing page that does not convert with an offer that is not compelling. That is not an ad problem. That is a stack problem.
It doesn't have to be that way. The parts are known. The order is known. The templates exist. The rest of this book is the whole build.
CHAPTER 3The 5-Part System
Every business's marketing sits on five parts, stacked in order. Each part depends on the one below it. Skip a part and everything above it leaks money.
Part 1: OFFER. Hormozi's Value Equation + Suby's 7-Part Godfather. Weak offer, weak everything. Strong offer, everything works better than you deserve.
Part 2: CONTENT. Marcus Sheridan's Big 5. Cost, Problems, Versus, Best-of, Reviews. His River Pools case: one article drove $35M in tracked revenue (Sheridan, They Ask You Answer, 2019, rev. 2022).
Part 3: TRAFFIC. Two channels, not seven. Cold vs. warm economics (Suby, 2019). One paid channel. One organic channel. Prove it works before you add a third.
Part 4: CONVERSION. Brunson's Perfect Webinar (Brunson, Expert Secrets, 2017) + Cattoni's empathy layer + the 6-section landing page. Average page converts 2.35%. Top 10% converts 11.45% (WordStream, 2022).
Part 5: RETENTION. Hormozi's continuity math ($100M Money Models, 2024). Keeping a customer costs 5 to 7x less than acquiring one (Bain, The Loyalty Effect, Reichheld 1996, replicated HBR 2014).
CHAPTER 4Sample Template: The Grand Slam Offer Sheet
The full book ships with 25 templates. Here is Template 1. Suby's 7-part Godfather structure (Suby, 2019), fill in the brackets, ship the first draft.
Why it works: every part addresses a real objection. Nothing manufactured. If the total value does not clear 2x the price, add components or subtract price. The trim step is where most owners fail. They add. Great offer builders subtract.
CHAPTER 5AI Prompt Pack (Preview)
The full book ships with 15 copy-paste AI prompts. Paste into ChatGPT or Claude, replace the brackets, iterate. Here are 5 you get.
CHAPTER 6The 5 KPIs That Matter
Owner-operators track vanity: impressions, likes, followers, page views. None pay a bill. Track these 5. Ignore the rest.
The rule: LTV to CAC under 3:1 and you are one bad quarter from trouble. Either raise LTV (retention plays in Part 5) or lower CAC (better offer, better conversion, better content). Benchmark sources: WordStream 2024, Ruler Analytics 2024, HubSpot State of Marketing 2023.
CHAPTER 73 Common Mistakes That Drain Budgets
The full book lists 5 in order of damage. These 3 kill more marketing budgets than the other 2 combined.
Mistake 1: Chasing tactics before the offer is right. Cost: multiplier on everything else. Weak offer means every dollar spent on ads, content, and conversion returns less than it should. Fix: Part 1. Do not spend on traffic until the offer checklist is complete.
Mistake 2: Cheap traffic to a weak offer. Cost: you scale a losing formula. Doubling the ad budget on a weak funnel produces 2x the losses, not 2x the wins. Fix: prove the funnel converts at small budget before you scale spend. If $30/day is not converting, $300/day will not either.
Mistake 3: No retention loop. Cost: 5-7x higher than acquisition (Bain, 1996, replicated HBR 2014). Every customer you fail to bring back is 5-7x more expensive to replace. Fix: Part 5. Any 3 of the 6 retention plays will move revenue.
The One Thing To Do Today
Before you close this file, do this ONE thing:
Get a piece of paper. Set a 15-minute timer. Answer the seven prompts from Chapter 1. Then text your seven-answer paragraph to three past customers and ask "would this make sense to a new person?" You will get more clarity in one hour than in a month of tactic-tweaking.
If the offer paragraph reads clean, jump to Part 4 and rewrite your landing page hero to match. If it reads fuzzy, do not spend another dollar on ads until it reads clean.
Go do it. Come back for the rest.
